Classification and difference of various network cables

Nowadays, the Network Cable arowana in the computer market is mixed, with various colors and skins, making people in the industry dumbfounded. Here are some basic knowledge about network cables for your reference:

Cables mainly include: twisted pair (also known as network cable), optical fiber and coaxial cable (earlier products, now rarely seen and used). Among the three, coaxial cable is gradually eliminated by the market due to its relatively high price and general performance; optical fiber has very good performance, but the price is too high and installation is more difficult. Generally, it is only used when all indicators require relatively high performance. In high network environments, home networks rarely have this application; twisted-pair cables are widely used in wired networks because of their low price, simple installation method, and good and stable performance.

Twisted wire cables are generally divided into 8 categories:

Category 1 line is mainly used for voice transmission;

Because the transmission frequency of category 2 line is only 1MHZ, it is mainly used in the old token network;

Category 3 cables are mainly used for 10BASE-T networks;

Category 4 line token network and 10BASE-T/100BASE-T network;

Category 5 cable has a transmission rate of 100MHz and is used in 100BASE-T and 10BASE-T networks. It is the most commonly used Ethernet Cable;

Super Category 5 cable is mainly used for Gigabit Ethernet (1000Mbps);

The transmission frequency of Category 6 lines is 1MHz~250MHz, which is suitable for networks with a transmission rate higher than 1Gbps;

Category 7 cable is the latest unshielded twisted pair cable with a transmission frequency of at least 500+MHz and a transmission rate of 10+Gbps.

In addition, twisted pair cables are divided into two types: shielded and unshielded. Shielded twisted pair cables are more reliable and stable than ordinary unshielded twisted pairs because of the added shielding layer, but the price is higher than that of non-ordinary cables. The most common application in daily use is Category 5 unshielded twisted pair, which consists of 4 pairs and each pair consists of 2 22-26 gauge insulated copper wires twisted with each other and finally wrapped in an insulated cable sleeve. Wire composition, with unshielded jacket, small diameter, saving space, light weight, easy to bend, easy to install, flame retardant and other characteristics. The effective transmission distance is 100M, and the transmission rate is 100MHz. The price gap of different types of cables is also relatively large, generally a few cents to two or three yuan per meter, the price of our commonly used category 5 cables is generally around 1.5 yuan. The main brands are: Anpu, CommScope (AVAYA), Simon, Lucent, Lite, etc. The main domestic brands of network cables are: Keweier, IBMNET, TCL, Yizhou, Tsinghua Tongfang

A high-quality network cable should have the following characteristics, which can be selected as appropriate when selecting:

1. The core should be solid and made of pure copper;

2. The thickness of the core also directly affects the use effect. It is better to consider the thicker core;

3. Soft hand feeling, consistent cable thickness and uniform wire skin color;

4. The cable sheath of the network cable cannot be ignited. It is best not to choose a cable that can ignite the sheath of the network cable with an ordinary lighter.

The following describes how to distinguish what types of networks belong to

The logo of Category 5 cable is "CAT5", with a bandwidth of 100M+, which is suitable for networks below 100M; the logo of Category 5 Super Cable is "CAT5E" with a bandwidth of 155M, which is the current mainstream product; the logo of Category 6 cable is "+CAT6" ", the bandwidth of 250M, used to set up a gigabit network, is the trend of future development. The unshielded twisted pair cable is composed of multiple twisted pairs and a plastic sheath. The five categories refer to the five different quality levels defined by the International Electrical Industry Association for twisted pair cables. In principle, the larger the number, the newer the version, the better the quality, and the stronger the transmission capacity.
