Bandwidth and transmission rate are often seen as synonyms, but if you've worked in the cable industry, you know that the two terms actually mean very different things.

Internet service providers may be touting speeds of up to 500 megabits per second (Mbps). In this case, they are actually referring to the transmission rate. In the cabling industry, bandwidth is a property of the cable -- the ability of the cable to transmit identifiable signals to the far end.
Any signal transmitted by a copper or fiber optic link will decay when it reaches the far end. This is not just a signal loss, but also a number of more complex factors, such as return loss (reflection) and, in the case of copper cored cables, crosstalk. Cable manufacturers design their copper or fibre-optic cables to transmit these raw signals at higher rates.
For copper cables, you may have heard that Type 6 network jumpers have a bandwidth of 250MHz and Super 6 network jumpers have a bandwidth of 500MHz. Bandwidth parameters are usually printed on the cable casing. This causes a lot of confusion because we assume that the bandwidth of the network is expressed in megabits per second or gigabits per second. This doesn't mean we were wrong -- Super Six network jumpers can run at up to 500MHz of bandwidth, while the network's bandwidth can reach 10Gb/s.
So why use megahertz (MHz) to define various class-level cable bandwidths? A megahertz is a unit of frequency, or the number of times a wave completes a cycle in one second -- 1 Hertz is equivalent to one cycle in one second, and 1 megahertz is equivalent to a million cycles per second. The relationship between speed and frequency is a bit complicated, but in short, more frequency is needed to carry more bits of data. Each bit of data is encoded on a carrier frequency, and the amount of data that can be transmitted per second depends on the signal encoding scheme of the transmitting device.

For example, 1000Mbit /s Gigabit Ethernet adopts the full duplex working mode of 4 pairs of lines, and only requires 100MHz for its transmission bandwidth.
